Install a VPN before you leave home
Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, ChatGPT — all blocked in China. Any VPN must be installed and tested BEFORE arriving in China. It will not work if you install it after arrival.

China runs on QR code payments. Since July 2023, foreigners can link international Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover cards. It takes 5 minutes and saves you from carrying cash everywhere.
Get mobile data (eSIM or airport SIM)
You need a Chinese phone number for WeChat, DiDi, and food delivery. Two options: buy an eSIM before departure (Airalo, Holafly) or buy a physical SIM at XIY airport on arrival. Passport required.

The must-sees for first-time visitors
Terracotta Warriors (兵马俑)
UNESCO World Heritage. Must-see. 3 pits with thousands of life-sized soldiers. ~1hr drive from Xi'an. Allow 3-4 hours. Book a tour or take public bus from Xi'an Railway Station.
Xi'an City Wall (西安城墙)
Best-preserved ancient city wall in China. 14km long. Rent a bike (¥45) and cycle the full loop (2hrs). Best at sunset. Metro: Yongningmen (Line 2).
Muslim Quarter (回民街)
Famous food street near the Drum Tower. Lamb skewers, biangbiang noodles, pita bread soaked in lamb soup (羊肉泡馍). Great for dinner.
Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔)
Tang Dynasty pagoda (7 stories, 64m). Located at Da Ci'en Temple. Nice evening fountain/music show at the north square.
Shaanxi History Museum (陕西历史博物馆)
One of China's best museums. Free entry with limited daily tickets (book early online). Terracotta warriors artifacts, Tang dynasty treasures.
Hua Shan (华山)
Day trip (2hr from Xi'an). One of China's most famous and dangerous hiking mountains. The "plank walk" is world-famous. Not for those afraid of heights. Cable car available.

Must-Try Local Dishes
- Yangrou Paomo (羊肉泡馍) — Bread in lamb soup. The iconic Xi'an dish. Tear the bread yourself and soak it in rich lamb broth
- Biangbiang Noodles (裤带面) — Belt-width noodles, chewy and satisfying. Served with chili oil and vegetables
- Lamb Skewers (羊肉串) — Cumin-spiced grilled lamb skewers. Best found in Muslim Quarter
- Roujiamo (肉夹馍) — "Chinese hamburger." Shredded pork stuffed in crispy bread
Eating Tips for Tourists
- 🏪 Best area — Muslim Quarter (回民街) is the best food destination. Go in the evening for the full experience
- 📱 Spice level — Xi'an food is less spicy than Chengdu but very flavorful. The signature flavor is cumin rather than chili
- 🌶️ Portions — Generous portions. One bowl of Yangrou Paomo is usually a full meal
- 🥢 Etiquette — When eating Yangrou Paomo, you tear the bread into small pieces before the waiter takes it back for broth. Smaller pieces = better flavor absorption

Near City Wall (Bell Tower/Drum Tower)
Most convenient for tourists. Close to Muslim Quarter. Walking distance to many attractions. Metro Line 2. Wide range of hotels.
Qujiang District (曲江)
Near Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Modern area with newer hotels. Quieter atmosphere. Great for evening walks near the pagoda.
Xi'an Railway Station Area
Budget options. Convenient for the Terracotta Warriors bus. Good HSR connections. Basic accommodation at lower prices.
Gaoxin District (高新)
Modern business area. Good hotels but further from attractions. Better for business travelers. Clean and well-organized area.
