Which Cards Work?

✅ WORKS (International Cards)

  • • Visa (issued by Chase, Citi, HSBC UK, etc.)
  • • Mastercard (issued outside China)
  • • American Express (international cards)
  • • Discover

Key: Card must be issued by a bank OUTSIDE China

❌ DOESN'T WORK

  • • Visa/Mastercard issued by Chinese banks (ICBC, BOC, CCB, etc.)
  • • UnionPay cards (Chinese domestic network)
  • • JCB (sometimes works, mostly doesn't)
  • • Prepaid cards without bank backing

Chinese banks issue cards that look international but don't work for "foreign card" option

Step-by-Step Setup

1

Download WeChat & Verify Identity

  1. Download WeChat from App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android)
  2. Open app → Tap "Sign Up"
  3. Register with any phone number (international numbers work fine)
  4. Go to Me → Services
  5. Tap Pay → "Verify Now"
  6. Select Passport as ID type
  7. Scan passport or manually enter details (name, passport number, nationality)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Mistake #1: Using a Chinese Bank's "International" Card

Many Chinese banks (ICBC, Bank of China, CCB) issue Visa/Mastercard that look international. They DON'T work for the foreign card option.

✅ Fix: Use cards issued by banks in USA, UK, EU, Australia, etc.

❌ Mistake #2: Entering China Address as Billing Address

Your billing address must match your card's real billing address in your home country.

✅ Fix: Enter your actual home country address, even though you're in China

❌ Mistake #3: Not Telling Your Bank About China Travel

Banks often block foreign transactions as fraud protection, causing setup to fail silently.

✅ Fix: Call your bank before traveling: "I'll be using this card in China, please enable international transactions"

❌ Mistake #4: Trying to Link Debit Cards Instead of Credit Cards

International DEBIT cards often fail. CREDIT cards work better.

✅ Fix: Use credit cards, not debit cards

Troubleshooting

"Card verification failed" error

Possible causes:

  • Bank blocked the transaction
  • Billing address mismatch
  • Chinese-issued card (not truly international)

Solution: Call your bank first. Then check billing address. Try a different card.

Face verification keeps failing
  • Ensure good lighting (natural light best)
  • Remove glasses/hat
  • Hold phone steady
  • Follow instructions exactly (blink when told, nod when told)
  • Try different background (plain wall works best)
Payment works in some places but not others

Foreign cards have limitations:

  • Some small vendors don't accept international cards
  • Public transport may not work
  • Large chains (7-11, Starbucks, McDonald's) usually work fine

This is normal. Carry cash for small vendors.

People Also Ask

Do I need a Chinese phone number?

No for setup. You can register with any international number. However, for some features and better functionality, a Chinese number helps. You can add a Chinese number later without losing your account.

Can I receive money/transfers?

Limited. Foreign card WeChat Pay is mainly for spending. Receiving transfers may require Chinese bank account verification.

What happens if I hit the yearly limit?

Your foreign card stops working for payments. You have 2 options:

  1. Wait until next year (calendar year reset)
  2. Open Chinese bank account and link that (no limits)

Is WeChat Pay safe?

Yes, it's one of China's most trusted payment systems. Use the same precautions as any payment app: don't share your password, enable fingerprint/face unlock, and only send money to people you know.
