How to Book Hotels in China

Finding a hotel in China as a foreigner isn't as straightforward as Booking.com makes it seem. Here's what you need to know before you book.

⚠️ Key fact: Not all hotels in China are licensed to accept foreign guests. Always check the 涉外 (foreigner-friendly) filter before booking.
🌐

Booking.com (English)

Best for first-timers. English interface, shows foreigner-friendly hotels. Slightly more expensive than Chinese platforms.

  • ✅ English interface + international customer support
  • ✅ Shows 涉外 (foreigner-friendly) hotels by default
  • ❌ 10-20% more expensive than local platforms
  • ❌ Fewer listings than Ctrip
💳

Ctrip / Trip.com (搏程)

China's largest OTA. Wider selection, better prices. Chinese interface but usable with translation tools.

  • ✅ Best prices + largest hotel selection
  • ✅ Trip.com has English version
  • ❌ Need to filter for 涉外 hotels
  • ❌ Customer support mostly Chinese

📌 How to Book (4 Steps)

1

Search with 涉外 Filter

On Ctrip/Trip.com, after searching for a city and dates, look for a filter labeled 涉外 or 扣宾客房 (accepts foreign guests). Some apps also call it "可接待外宾". This is the MOST important filter — without it, you may be turned away at check-in.

⚠️ Real story: Many foreigners have booked a hotel, taken a taxi there at 11pm, only to be told "sorry, we don't accept foreign guests." Always filter for 涉外!
2

Choose Free Cancellation

Always look for 可取消 (free cancellation) when booking. Chinese travel plans change, and non-refundable bookings are truly non-refundable. Many hotels offer free cancellation up to 24h before check-in.

3

Pay Online or at Hotel

Chinese platforms offer two options: 択线 (pay online with WeChat/Alipay) or 店付 (pay at the hotel). Paying online is simpler and often cheaper. Paying at the hotel gives you flexibility.

4

Check-in with Passport

At the hotel, present your passport at the front desk. They'll make a photocopy and register you with the local police (this is automatic, you don't need to do anything). You may need to leave a 押金 (deposit) in cash or a card pre-authorization.

⚠️ Danger Zone: Hotel Edition

⚠️ Not all hotels accept foreigners — This is the #1 mistake. Always check the 涉外 (foreigner-friendly) filter. Even some 4-5 star hotels in smaller cities may not accept foreign passports. If in doubt, message the hotel before booking.

⚠️ Deposit traps — Many hotels require a cash deposit at check-in. Some don't accept foreign credit cards for the deposit. Ask about the 押金 (deposit) policy when you check in. Amounts can be 200-1000 RMB depending on the hotel.

⚠️ Name must match passport — The name on your booking must match your passport exactly. If your friend booked for you, the hotel may refuse check-in unless your name is listed as a guest. Always book under your own passport name.

⚠️ Hotel WiFi and the Great Firewall — Hotel WiFi blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. Your VPN is essential. Some hotels also require you to enter a Chinese phone number to use WiFi — if you don't have one, ask the front desk to help.

💡 Hotel Pro Tips

💡 International chains are safest: Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Shangri-La all accept foreigners. They also have English-speaking staff and international-standard service.
💡 Print your hotel address in Chinese: Give it to taxi drivers. Write: hotel name + address in Chinese characters. Your booking confirmation usually has this. Show it to the driver.
💡 Book with Trip.com (English): Ctrip's international site Trip.com has an English interface and reliable foreigner-friendly filter. It's the safest option for first-timers.
💡 Check reviews from other foreigners: On Ctrip/Trip.com, look for reviews mentioning 外国人 (foreigner) to see if other foreign guests had a good experience.

⚠️ Note

Hotel policies vary by city and hotel type. International chain hotels (Marriott, Hilton, Shangri-La) are generally the most foreigner-friendly. Budget hotels and hostels may not accept foreign guests at all. Always confirm before booking.
