🌍 Visa-Free Entry (免签)

China has been rapidly expanding visa-free access since 2024. As of June 2026, citizens of 50+ countries can enter China without a visa for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

✅ Typical visa-free terms:

  • 15 days for most European countries
  • 30 days for Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and several others
  • Single or multiple entry depending on the agreement
  • • For tourism, business, or family visits (not work or study)

Countries with visa-free access (partial list):

🇪🇺 France
🇩🇪 Germany
🇮🇳 Italy
🇪🇸 Spain
🇨🇧 Switzerland
🇪🇨 Netherlands

ⓘ This list changes frequently. Always confirm with your local Chinese embassy before booking.

⚠️ Important: Even with visa-free access, you must:
  • ✓ Have a passport valid for at least 6 months
  • ✓ Have a confirmed return or onward ticket
  • ✓ Have hotel bookings or proof of accommodation
  • ✓ Register with local police within 24 hours of arrival (your hotel does this automatically)

✈️ Transit Without Visa (TWOV)

If you're transiting through China to a third country, you may qualify for visa-free transit in select cities.

24h
Transit in any city
72h
In select cities
144h
In major hubs (6 days!)

💡 How TWOV works:

  • • You need a connecting flight to a third country (not returning to where you came from)
  • • 144-hour TWOV available in: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, and many other cities
  • • You must enter and exit from the same region or specific ports
  • • No need to leave the airport for 24h transit — but why not explore?

💣 Tourist Visa (L-Visa) Application

If your country isn't visa-free and you're not transiting, you'll need to apply for a tourist visa (L-visa) at your local Chinese embassy or visa center.

1

Check Which Embassy Covers You

Find the Chinese embassy or visa center in your country. Some countries have multiple consulates that serve specific regions.

2

Prepare Your Documents

  • • Passport (valid 6+ months, 2+ blank pages)
  • • Completed visa application form (online or paper)
  • • Recent passport photo (48mm x 33mm, white background)
  • • Flight itinerary (round trip or onward ticket)
  • • Hotel bookings for your stay
  • • Bank statements (sometimes required)
3

Submit and Pay

Submit your application in person or through an agent. Fees vary by country and processing time (typically $80-180 USD). Processing takes 4-7 business days normally.

4

Collect Your Visa

Once approved, your visa will be pasted into your passport. Single-entry (one visit) or multiple-entry (multiple visits within the validity period). Check the validity dates carefully.

⚠️ Note: Visa rules can change with short notice. Some consulates require in-person interviews. Always check the latest requirements on the official Chinese embassy website for your country.

❓ Common Questions

Can I extend my visa-free stay?

In some cases, yes. Visit the local Exit and Entry Administration office in the city you're in. Overstaying can result in fines of 500 RMB/day.

Do I need a visa for Hong Kong or Macau?

Hong Kong and Macau have separate visa policies from mainland China. Many nationalities get visa-free entry to both for 14-90 days. Check separately.

What if I overstay my visa?

Overstays are taken seriously. Fines of 500 RMB/day for the first few days, potentially up to 10,000 RMB or detention for longer overstays. You may also be banned from re-entering China.

Can I apply for a visa online?

Some countries now offer online visa applications (e-visa). Check if your country participates. The traditional method (paper application at embassy) is still the most common.
