Install a VPN before you leave home
Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, ChatGPT — all blocked in China. Any VPN must be installed and tested BEFORE arriving in China. It will not work if you install it after arrival.

Shenzhen runs on QR code payments. Since July 2023, foreigners can link international Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover cards. It takes 5 minutes and saves you from carrying cash everywhere.
Get mobile data (eSIM or airport SIM)
You need a Chinese phone number for WeChat, DiDi, and food delivery. Two options: buy an eSIM before departure (Airalo, Holafly) or buy a physical SIM at SZX airport on arrival. Passport required.

OCT Loft (华侨城创意文化园)
Creative arts district in Nanshan — galleries, cafes, independent boutiques, and street art. Great for photos and a relaxed afternoon. Metro: Qiaocheng East (Line 1/2).
Lianhua Mountain Park (莲花山公园)
A hilltop park in Futian with panoramic city views from the summit. Free entry. The 15-minute walk to the top is easy and rewarded with skyline views. Metro: Lianhuacun (Line 3/4).
Dameisha Beach (大梅沙)
Shenzhen's most popular city beach. Good escape from the summer heat. ~45 min by bus from city center. Can get crowded on weekends. Free entry (limited capacity).
Shenzhen Bay Park (深圳湾公园)
Waterfront promenade stretching along Shenzhen Bay with views of Hong Kong's skyline across the water. Excellent for sunset walks, cycling, and people-watching. Metro: Shenzhen Bay Park (Line 9).
Dafen Oil Painting Village (大芬油画村)
World's largest oil painting production and export center. Watch artists at work in open studios, commission custom paintings, or buy affordable art. Unique cultural experience. Metro: Dafen (Line 3).

Must-Try Local Food
- Cantonese dim sum — Har gow, siu mai, char siu bao. Find authentic spots in Luohu and Shekou
- Seafood in Shekou — Fresh seafood markets and waterfront restaurants along the Sea World area
- Street food at Dongmen — Grilled skewers, stinky tofu, bubble tea, and more at Dongmen Pedestrian Street
- Diverse dining — Shenzhen's food scene is less distinctive than Guangzhou or Chengdu but incredibly diverse, with cuisines from every Chinese province

- 🌏 International options — Shekou has many international restaurants (Japanese, Italian, Indian, Western). Best area if you miss home food
- 🏪 Convenience stores — FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, and Lawson are everywhere. Good for snacks, drinks, and quick meals
- 📱 Food delivery — Meituan and Ele.me deliver to your hotel. Apps are in Chinese, but you can order through your hotel concierge
- 🥢 Chopsticks only — Most restaurants don't provide forks. Practice beforehand or ask for 叉子 (chāzi)

Recommended areas for different travel styles
Luohu
Near the Lo Wu border crossing to Hong Kong. Busy area with cheap hotels, street markets, and easy access to HK. Best for budget travelers and HK combo trips.
Futian / CBD
Modern central business district. Great metro access, business-style hotels, shopping malls, and parks (Lianhua Mountain). Best for convenience and central location.
Nanshan / Science Park
Tech hub of Shenzhen. Modern hotels, close to OCT Loft and Shenzhen Bay Park. Slightly quieter but very well connected. Best for tech visitors and modern vibes.
Shekou
Expat-friendly area with international restaurants, seaside promenade, and Sea World nightlife. Further from the center but the best area for Western comforts.
