Install a VPN before you leave home
Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, ChatGPT — all blocked in China. Any VPN must be installed and tested BEFORE arriving in China. It will not work if you install it after arrival.

China runs on QR code payments. Since July 2023, foreigners can link international Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover cards. It takes 5 minutes and saves you from carrying cash everywhere.
Get mobile data (eSIM or airport SIM)
You need a Chinese phone number for WeChat, DiDi, and food delivery. Two options: buy an eSIM before departure (Airalo, Holafly) or buy a physical SIM at KMG airport on arrival. Passport required.

The must-sees for first-time visitors
Stone Forest (石林)
UNESCO World Heritage site, 2 hours from Kunming. Surreal karst stone formations rising from the ground like a forest of petrified trees. Allow a half to full day. Best to join a day tour for transport and guide. Metro: not reachable — bus or tour required.
Dianchi Lake (滇池)
Massive freshwater lake — the largest in Yunnan. Best viewing at Haigeng Park (海埂公园). Take the Western Hills (西山) cable car for panoramic lake and city views. Free entry to park area. Metro: Dianchi (Line 5).
Yunnan Nationalities Village (云南民族村)
25 ethnic minority villages recreated in one park. Live dance performances, traditional architecture, and cultural exhibits. Located near Dianchi Lake — easy to combine in one visit. Paid entry. Metro: Yunnan Nationalities Village (Line 5).
Green Lake Park (翠湖公园)
City center park. Free entry. Thousands of seagulls visit in winter (November to March). Locals practicing tai chi, dancing, playing mahjong — great for people-watching. Metro: Cuihu (Line 4). Best park in the city center.
Yuantong Temple (圆通寺)
1,200-year-old Buddhist temple — the oldest in Kunming. Peaceful atmosphere with a central pond and bridge, fewer tourists than other sites. Beautiful mountain backdrop. Paid entry. Walking distance from Green Lake Park.
Dali Ancient Town
2 hours by HSR from Kunming. Historic town with Erhai Lake and stunning mountain backdrop. Day trip is feasible. Very popular with backpackers — great cafes, bars, and local crafts. HSR: Kunming to Dali station (¥145, ~2hr).

Must-Try Local Dishes
- Across Bridge Noodles (过桥米线) — Yunnan's most famous dish. Giant bowl of broth + add your own ingredients at the table. Find at Qiaoxiangyuan (桥香园) chain
- Steam Pot Chicken (汽锅鸡) — Chicken steamed in a special clay pot. Pure, clear broth with intense flavor. Found at Yunnan-style restaurants
- Mushroom Hot Pot (野生菌火锅) — Yunnan is China's mushroom capital. Try in summer/autumn when wild mushrooms are in season
- Erkuai (饵块) — Rice cakes, grilled or stir-fried. Street food staple. Also try Xuanwei ham — Yunnan's famous cured ham
Eating Tips for Tourists
- 🌶️ Spice level — Yunnan food is less spicy than Sichuan. Dishes are more herbal and aromatic. "Not spicy" = 不辣 (bù là)
- 🍄 Mushroom season — June to September is the foodie highlight. Try the wild mushroom hot pot — it's a Yunnan signature
- 🏪 Convenience stores — FamilyMart and 7-Eleven are available in the city center. Good for snacks and drinks
- 📱 Food delivery — Meituan and Ele.me deliver to hotels. Apps are in Chinese, ask your hotel concierge for help

Green Lake (Cuihu) Area
Best for tourists. Central location, walking distance to Green Lake, Yuantong Temple, and Nanping Street. Wide range of hotels. Metro Line 4 nearby.
Nanping Street (南屏街)
Shopping and dining hub with excellent metro access. Lively atmosphere day and night. Good base for first-time visitors who want urban convenience. Metro lines 2/3/5.
Dianchi Lake Area
Scenic lakeside location, further from city center. Great for nature lovers. Close to Nationalities Village and Western Hills. More relaxed pace. Metro Line 5.
