Guangzhou runs on QR code payments. Since July 2023, foreigners can link international Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover cards. It takes 5 minutes and saves you from carrying cash everywhere.
Get mobile data (eSIM or airport SIM)
You need a Chinese phone number for WeChat, DiDi, and food delivery. Two options: buy an eSIM before departure (Airalo, Holafly) or buy a physical SIM at Baiyun Airport on arrival. Passport required.

Beijing Road (北京路步行街)
Historic shopping street with an archaeological display of ancient roads from Ming, Song, and Tang dynasties visible under glass panels. Great shopping, street food, and night market vibes.
Chimelong Safari Park (长隆野生动物世界)
One of China's best zoos with drive-through safari areas, giant pandas, koalas, and white tigers. Highly family-friendly. Full day recommended. Metro: Hanxi Changlong (Line 3/7).

- Dim Sum (点心) — The original. Go to Guangzhou Restaurant (广州酒家) or Dian Dou De (点都德) for classic har gow, siu mai, and char siu bao
- Roast Goose (烧鹅) — Crispy-skinned roasted goose. A Cantonese specialty you won't find this good anywhere else
- Wonton Noodles (云吞面) — Thin egg noodles with shrimp wontons in broth. A Guangzhou staple
- White Cut Chicken (白切鸡) — Poached chicken served with ginger-scallion oil. Simple but perfect
- Double Skin Milk (双皮奶) — Silky steamed milk custard, a classic Cantonese dessert
Eating Tips for Tourists
- 🏪 Canton Fair crowds — During Apr and Oct, every restaurant in Tianhe is packed. Book ahead
- 📱 Food delivery — Meituan and Ele.me deliver to your hotel. Apps are in Chinese, but you can order through your hotel concierge
- 🌶️ Spice level — Cantonese food is generally NOT spicy. Great for those who prefer milder flavors
- 🥢 Chopsticks only — Most restaurants don't provide forks. Practice beforehand or ask for 叉子 (chāzi)
