Install a VPN before you leave home
Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, ChatGPT — all blocked in China. Any VPN must be installed and tested BEFORE arriving in China. It will not work if you install it after arrival.

Chengdu runs on QR code payments. Since July 2023, foreigners can link international Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover cards. It takes 5 minutes and saves you from carrying cash everywhere.
Get mobile data (eSIM or airport SIM)
You need a Chinese phone number for WeChat, DiDi, and food delivery. Two options: buy an eSIM before departure (Airalo, Holafly) or buy a physical SIM at Tianfu/Shuangliu Airport on arrival. Passport required.

The must-sees for first-time visitors
Giant Panda Base (熊猫基地)
MUST DO. See giant pandas up close in a natural breeding facility. Go early (before 10am) when pandas are most active. ~30min from city center. Book tickets online in advance.
Jinli Ancient Street (锦里)
Reconstructed Ming and Qing dynasty style street. Full of souvenir shops, local snacks, and street performers. Free entry. Best at night when red lanterns light up the street.
Wuhou Shrine (武侯祠)
Dedicated to Zhuge Liang and the Three Kingdoms period. Beautiful gardens, ancient architecture, and historic artifacts. Adjacent to Jinli Street. Paid entry.
Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子)
Wide and Narrow alleys with Qing dynasty architecture. Now filled with trendy cafes, teahouses, boutiques, and restaurants. Great for people-watching and photos. Free entry.
Leshan Giant Buddha
71m-tall cliff-carved Buddha statue, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 1.5hr by bus from Chengdu. Best as a half-day trip. Combine with a river cruise for the best views.
Sichuan Opera (川剧)
Famous for face-changing (变脸) performances. Also includes fire-spitting, puppet shows, and acrobatics. Book tickets in advance. Shows at Shufeng Yayun Teahouse and other venues.

Must-Try Local Dishes
- Hot Pot (火锅) — THE Chengdu experience. Try Haidilao (海底捞) or a local spot. Broth options: spicy (mala) or mushroom/pork bone for non-spicy
- Kung Pao Chicken (宫保鸡丁) — Diced chicken with peanuts and dried chili. Originally from Sichuan — this is the real version
- Mapo Tofu (麻婆豆腐) — Silken tofu in spicy, numbing sauce. Iconic Sichuan dish
- Dan Dan Noodles (担担面) — Spicy minced pork noodles with sesame paste. Street food classic
- Chuanchuan (串串香) — Skewers of meat and veg cooked in spicy broth. Fun, social, cheap
Eating Tips for Tourists
- 🌶️ Mala warning — Sichuan food is heavy on chili and Sichuan pepper (numbing). Say "微辣" (wēi là - mild spice) if you can't handle it
- 📱 Food delivery — Meituan and Ele.me deliver to your hotel. Apps are in Chinese, but you can order through your hotel concierge
- 🏪 Convenience stores — FamilyMart and 7-Eleven everywhere. Good for snacks and cold drinks to cool your mouth
- 🥢 Chopsticks only — Most restaurants don't provide forks. Practice beforehand or ask for 叉子 (chāzi)

Recommended areas for different travel styles
Jinjiang
City center, most touristy area. Close to Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli. Wide range of hotels. Good metro access (Lines 1/2/3).
Wuhou
Historical area near Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Street. Quieter than city center. Great restaurants nearby. Metro Line 3.
Gaoxin
Modern tech zone. Newer hotels, more international chains. Quieter at night. Good option for business travelers. Metro Lines 1/5.
Chunxi Road Area
Chengdu's main shopping district. Vibrant day and night. Excellent metro access. Best for shoppers and food lovers who want to be in the action.
