📌 Step-by-Step: Book Your First Ticket
Choose Your Booking Method
You have two options:
📱 12306 App
Download from app store. Full Chinese interface but most reliable. Requires Chinese phone number to register.
💚 WeChat Mini Program
Open WeChat → Discover → Mini Programs → Search "火车票" (train tickets). Uses your WeChat account — no extra registration.
⭐ RecommendedSearch for Trains
In the app or mini program:
- 1. Tap the search bar for 出发地 (departure) and 目的地 (destination)
- 2. Type city names in pinyin (e.g. "beijing" for 北京, "shanghai" for 上海)
- 3. Select your 出发日期 (travel date)
- 4. Tap 查询 (search)
Choose Your Train
Results show all trains for that route. Key info:
- 🚇 Train code — G = high-speed (350km/h), D = fast (250km/h), K = express (slower, cheaper)
- ⏰ Times: Departure → Arrival + Duration
- 💳 Price: Based on seat type. Second class = cheapest on high-speed trains
- 📅 余票 (Availability): Shows if seats remain. "有" = yes, numbers = exact count left
Select Seat and Add Passengers
Tap on a train to see seat options:
- 1. Choose seat type (二等座 / 一等座 / 商务座)
- 2. Tap 添加乘客 (Add Passenger)
- 3. Enter: Full name (as on passport), passport number, nationality
- 4. Select the passenger and tap confirm
Pay Within 30 Minutes
After submitting, you'll see an order confirmation:
- ✓ The order status will show 待支付 (pending payment)
- ✓ Tap 支付 (pay) within 30 minutes or the order auto-cancels
- ✓ Use WeChat Pay or Alipay to complete
- ✓ After payment, status changes to 已支付 (paid) — you're booked!
Use Your E-Ticket at the Station
Since 2020, China uses e-tickets only. Here's what you do at the station:
- Enter the station — show your passport at the 进站口 (entrance)
- Go through security — bags on X-ray, walk through metal detector
- Find your waiting area — check the big screen for your train's 检票口 (boarding gate) number
- Board when called — queue up at your gate when they announce boarding
- Scan passport at the gate — tap your passport on the scanner, the gate opens
- Find your carriage — follow the colored floor markers (身 numbers on platform floor)
- Find your seat — seats are labeled A-B-C (window-aisle-aisle) and D-E-F or A-C-D-F
🏛 At the Station: What to Look For
Big stations can be overwhelming. Here's the flow and what each sign means:
📅 What the Big Screen Shows:
| 车次 Train | 终点站 To | 开车 Depart | 区间 Status | 检票口 Gate | 备注 Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| G123 | 上海 Shanghai | 14:35 | 正常 On Time | A12 | 检票中 Boarding |
| D456 | 广州 Guangzhou | 15:10 | 正常 On Time | B3 | |
| Z21 | 西安 Xi'an | 16:00 | 延误 Delayed 20min | A5 |
💡 Look for your train number. The 检票口 column shows your gate. Head there and queue up when it says "检票中" (boarding).
⚠️ Danger Zone: Common Mistakes
Name Mismatch on Ticket
Your ticket name must match your passport exactly. If you use "Mike" instead of "Michael", or omit your middle name, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions.
Missing the 30-Minute Payment Window
After submitting an order on 12306, you have 30 minutes to pay. After that, the order is automatically cancelled and the seats are released.
Wrong Station: Beijing South vs Beijing West vs Beijing
Major cities have multiple train stations. Beijing has 4+: Beijing (北京站), Beijing West (北京西站), Beijing South (北京南站), Beijing Chaoyang (北京朝阳站). Make sure you go to the right station — they're miles apart!
Buying Tickets at Peak Times
Chinese New Year, National Day (Oct 1-7), and Labor Day (May 1-5) are travel rushes. Tickets sell out in minutes. Book at least 15 days in advance during these periods.
💡 Pro Tips
📱 Use WeChat Mini Program
Much easier than the 12306 app. No separate registration needed. You pay with WeChat Pay directly. Search "火车票" in WeChat mini programs.
💳 Buy Tickets 15 Days in Advance
Tickets go on sale 15 days before departure. For popular routes (Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Xi'an), book early, especially on weekends.
💡 Window Seat Hack
In second class (2+3 seating), seats A and F are window seats. D and C are aisle. For the best view, choose A (left side) or F (right side).
🎒 Bring Your Own Snacks
Train food is overpriced and mediocre. Buy snacks and water before boarding. The cart vendor sells instant noodles and drinks, but they're marked up.
🔌 Power Outlets on Board
G and D trains have USB ports and power outlets. They're under the seat (between your legs) or near the window. Bring your cable.
📄 Refund Policy
Cancel >48h before: 5% fee. 24-48h: 10%. <24h: 20%. After departure: cannot refund. Go to the ticket counter at the station.
