📱 Step-by-Step: How to Call a DiDi

📍 Step 1: Set Your Pickup & Destination

  1. DiDi automatically detects your current location as pickup point
  2. Tap the search bar saying 您要去哪儿?(Where are you going?)
  3. Type your destination — English works! DiDi searches Chinese addresses
  4. Select the correct address from the dropdown
  5. DiDi also shows 历史目的地(Recent Destinations) for quick selection
💡 Tip: Save frequently used addresses with Chinese labels (e.g. "Home" = "家", "Office" = "公司"). They'll auto-complete next time.

🚙 Step 2: Choose Your Ride Type

DiDi shows several ride options with estimated fares:

  • 🚗 快车 (Express) — The go-to choice. Standard car, best value.
  • 🚘 专车 (Premium) — Nicer car, water/snacks, professional driver. Costs 2-3x.
  • 👥 拼车 (Pool) — Cheapest (30-50% off). You might share with others. Route may be longer.
  • 🚕 出租车 (Taxi) — Hails a regular metered taxi through the app.
  • 🚐 六座商务 (6-Seat Van) — For groups > 4 people.
⚠️ 高峰溢价 (Surge Pricing) — During rush hour or rain, DiDi shows a multiplier like 1.2x or 1.5x. That means the fare is 20-50% higher. Wait a few minutes if you can — surge pricing changes minute by minute.

🔑 Step 3: Confirm & Track Your Driver

After tapping 确认呼叫 (Confirm & Call):

  1. A driver is assigned within seconds
  2. You'll see: Driver name (中文), car model, color, and license plate number
  3. The driver's car moves on the map toward your location
  4. Estimated arrival time (1-5 min typically)
🚨 SAFETY: VERIFY THE LICENSE PLATE!
Before getting in any car, check that the physical license plate on the car MATCHES the one shown in the app. This is your #1 safety measure against getting into the wrong vehicle.
💡 Tip: DiDi drivers rarely speak English. If you need to communicate, use the in-app text message feature (text shows up with auto-translate). Keep it simple: "这边等" (Waiting here) or "到了" (Arrived).

🛣️ Step 4: During the Ride

  • 📱 分享行程 (Share Trip) — Tap this and select a WeChat contact. They can see your real-time location. Highly recommended for safety!
  • 🗺️ Route display — The map shows your planned route. If the driver takes a very different route, it may be a scam.
  • 🔄 修改目的地 (Change Destination) — Need to go somewhere else? Tap this anytime.
  • 📞 联系司机 (Contact Driver) — Phone call or text. Use text with auto-translate.

🏁 Step 5: Payment & Rating

  • 💳 Payment is AUTOMATIC — DiDi deducts from your linked payment method. No need to handle cash or card.
  • ⭐ 评价司机 (Rate Driver) — You'll be prompted to rate. Options include 满意(Satisfied) or 非常不满意(Very Dissatisfied).
  • 🧾 开发票 (Get Receipt) — Tap to generate an official receipt for expense reports.
  • 🐣 打赏司机 (Tip Driver) — Optional, a few ¥ to say thanks (rarely used, not expected).
💡 Tip: If you lost something in the car, go to 我的订单 (My Orders) → select the ride → 联系司机 (Contact Driver). Send a quick message like "我的手机忘在车上了" (I left my phone in the car).

🚨 DiDi Danger Zone: Common Mistakes

🚫

Getting into the Wrong Car

This is the #1 risk. Always check 车牌号 (License Plate) in the app vs. the physical plate on the car. Scammers sometimes wait near pickup points and pretend to be your driver.

📞

Calling the Driver Unnecessarily

Most DiDi drivers don't speak English. If they call you (and you don't speak Chinese), just hang up and send a text through the app instead. Use simple words or point to your location on the map.

💰

Not Checking the Route

Rare but unscrupulous drivers may take a longer route. Watch the map during your ride. If the route looks wrong, tap 联系司机 and show them your destination.

🌐

DiDi English Version Limitations

DiDi does have an English interface setting (Settings → Language → English), but the English version may not show all ride types (e.g., 拼车/Pool might be missing). Many users find the Chinese version more complete and use this guide to navigate it.

💡 Pro Tips for DiDi

📍 Save Addresses in Chinese

Save your home and work addresses with Chinese labels. Ask a Chinese friend to write them once, and you'll never need to type again.

⏰ Avoid Peak Hours

8:00-9:30 AM and 5:30-7:30 PM are peak. Surge pricing can be 1.5-2x. Use the metro during peak for huge savings.

📱 DiDi Mini Program in WeChat

You can call a DiDi directly from WeChat! Open WeChat → Discover → Mini Programs → Search "滴滴出行". No need for the separate DiDi app.

🎫 Use Coupons

DiDi regularly gives out 优惠券 (Coupons). Check the coupon section before your ride — you might get ¥5-20 off.

🆘 Emergency Button

During a ride, you can tap 紧急求助 (Emergency Help). This contacts DiDi's security team and can automatically share your location with emergency contacts.

⭐ Rate Drivers Fairly

5 stars = 满意 (Satisfied). Only give less if there was a real problem. Low ratings affect a driver's ability to get rides.

⚠️ Important Notes

DiDi's interface may vary between Android and iOS, and by app version. The core terminology (license plate, ride types, payment) remains consistent.

DiDi English Version: Available under Settings → Language. The English version has a cleaner interface but may not offer all ride options.
