What to Pack for China

Packing smart is better than packing heavy. Here's a China-specific checklist — what you actually need and what you can skip.

💡 Golden rule: Pack light, shop local. China has great shopping. If you forget something, you can probably buy it there for less.

📄 Documents (The "Don't Lose" Bag)

Passport with 6+ months validity ⚠️ This is your most important item Passport photocopies (2-3 copies, separate from passport) Visa or visa-free approval (print confirmation if applicable) Flight itinerary & hotel bookings (printed) Travel insurance documents (recommended — hospitals may ask for upfront payment) Driver's license + International Driving Permit (if planning to drive) Emergency contact info written on a card (embassy number, hotel address in Chinese)

⚡ Electronics & Charging

Power bank (10,000-20,000 mAh) — No USB ports on trains! ⭐ Essential Travel adapter — China uses Type A (two flat pins) and Type I (three flat pins). Voltage: 220V USB-C / Lightning cables (bring an extra, they're cheap everywhere but annoying to hunt for) VPN already installed and tested ⚠️ Before you go! Essential apps downloaded — WeChat, Alipay, DiDi, Google Translate, Maps.me (offline maps) Headphones — for trains and planes E-reader or tablet for long train rides

🛌 Clothing

Comfortable walking shoes ⭐ You'll walk A LOT. Don't bring new shoes — break them in first. Light layers — spring jacket, sweaters. Chinese buildings have inconsistent heating/AC Rain jacket or umbrella (small folding umbrella) Comfortable pants — jeans are fine, but light trousers are better for hot/humid cities Scarf or light jacket for temples (shoulders covered) Sleepwear + slippers — some hotels don't provide slippers Swimwear (if your hotel has a pool)

💡 Tip: Chinese clothing sizes run SMALL. A US/European "Large" may be a Chinese "XL" or "XXL". If you need specific items, bring from home.

💉 Health & Toiletries

Prescription medications in original bottles with prescription note ⚠️ Bring enough for your trip + a few extra days Basic first aid — band-aids, pain reliever (ibuprofen), anti-diarrhea, motion sickness pills Hand sanitizer + tissues — some public restrooms don't have soap or paper Sunscreen (harder to find good quality in China) Insect repellent (south China, summer, rural areas) Toothbrush + toothpaste (some budget hotels provide poor quality) Deodorant (harder to find in China, bring from home)

⚠️ Important: Some medications banned in China include: codeine, strong painkillers, ADHD meds without approval. Check the China Customs list before packing. Certain CBD products are illegal.

Reusable water bottle (tap water isn't drinkable, but hotels have boiled/kettle water) Earplugs + sleep mask (for trains and bright hotel rooms) Small backpack / daypack for daily outings Laundry bag + quick-dry travel towel Packing cubes — game changer for organizing luggage Small amount of cash (~500-1000 CNY) for taxis and street vendors Notepad + pen (for showing Chinese characters to taxi drivers) Zip-lock bags (for toiletries, documents, wet items)
